A luxurious timber "fishing cottage" built to house Russian President Vladimir Putin is standing abandoned and deteriorating outside of the Finnish town of Savonlinna, according to Ilta-Sanomat.
The vacation property, valued at over 3 million euros (approximately 35 million SEK), is beautifully located on the shores of Lake Saimaa in southeastern Finland. The main three-story building features an elevator, wine cellar, underground garage, pool, sauna, billiard room, and eight toilets, according to the newspaper which refers to independent Russian news outlet The Insider.
A longtime friend of Putin from his student days, Viktor Hmarin, is said to have financed the construction, which began in 2014. Hmarin is described as a wealthy Russian businessman, married to Putin's cousin. His goal was reportedly to get Putin to spend more time with his childhood friend.
Putin visited Savonlinna in 2017 to meet with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö. In connection with this, the construction site at the property was closed down and the building stopped, according to The Insider, citing sources within Russian security services. This was reportedly because Putin said he was not interested in fishing in Finland and noted that "times have changed."
Hmarin himself has not been seen at the property since 2019, and the house currently stands deteriorating.

I huvudbyggnaden på tre våningar finns hiss, vinkällare, ett underjordiskt garage, pool, bastu, biljardsal och åtta toaletter, enligt tidningen som hänvisar till oberoende ryska The Insider.
En vän till Putin från studietiden, Viktor Hmarin, ska ha finansierat bygget som påbörjades 2014. Hmarin beskrivs som en rik rysk affärsman, gift med Putins kusin. Hans syfte ska varit att få Putin att tillbringa mer tid med sin ungdomsvän.
Putin besökte 2017 Nyslott för att möta Finlands president Sauli Niinistö. I samband med detta stängdes den dåvarande byggarbetsplatsen vid huset av och bygget stoppades, enligt Insider, som hänvisar till källor inom rysk säkerhetstjänst. Detta sedan Putin sagt sig inte vara intresserad av fiske i Finland och konstaterat att "tiderna förändrats".
Hmarin själv har inte setts vid fastigheten sedan 2019 och huset står i dag och förfaller.
