The number of military personnel is increasing both steadily and rapidly. Now privately owned companies will have to deploy more.

At the turn of the year, roughly 400,000 Swedes were stationed at war, according to figures from the Swedish National Service, reports SVT News. This is an increase of almost 20 percent in six months.

And there will be more, according to the Swedish Agency for Community Safety and Preparedness (MSB). Their mission includes helping employers identify which personnel should be deployed. A work that is now being intensified.

Today, it is above all staff at authorities, municipalities and regions who are placed at war. But companies that work with socially important activities will also have to deploy war to a greater extent.

The war in Ukraine shows how important it is with personnel in the rescue service and those who repair electricity and water supplies. Even healthcare staff, teachers and those who handle transport have skills that are needed on site, says Fredrik Stany, unit manager for crisis preparedness and civil defense at MSB.

It is the employer who announces if an employee is deployed for war, and it is not possible to refuse. In peacetime, nothing changes when you get a war placement. It comes into force if the government decides on heightened preparedness. Then the person who is stationed at war may not leave the country, change jobs or resign.

We don't know how many people will have to be sent to war, says Fredrik Stany.

It is difficult to give a figure on how many conscripts will eventually be needed, but it will be significantly more than today. And that is a positive development for the total defence.

Facts: War location

Being stationed at war with general duty means that a person is obliged to serve under high alert. The obligation to serve only comes into effect when the government decides on heightened preparedness and prescribes general duty. Then the person who is stationed at war may not leave the country, change jobs or resign.

No individual can have more than one military deployment, and the idea is that the person should be deployed in the activity where it is of greatest benefit to the overall defense.
