- Enclosed by England
Iran fell heavily against England in the first World Cup match, as many as 2-6. The goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand was knocked out groggy by a fellow player already after ten minutes. However, he continued to play for two minutes before he sat down and then was taken by the pitch on a stretcher. He does not play against Wales, the Federal Commander Carlos Queiroz has announced, but he can be ready for the last group game. The substitute Hossein Hosseini let in all six goals.
- Quiet Under the National Anthem
The Iranian national team was silent during the national anthem, probably in order to show solidarity with the protests in their homeland after the death of Mahsa Zhina Amini. The 22-year-old woman died after being arrested by the moral police for not wearing the hijab correctly. The national team captain Queiroz said after the World Cup premiere that the players were under pressure by the political situation and all questions surrounding it.

When the host nation Qatar went towards loss in the opening match, against Ecuador, large parts of the audience left the arena long before the 0-2 game was finished, a lot already in half time. Qatar is the first home team to lose its opening match in the World Cup and can become the second host country in the World Cup history that does not go to the playoffs, after South Africa in 2010.
- Senegal missing Mané
Without injured big star Sadio Mané, named Africa's best player and second in the Ballon d'Or vote, Senegal failed to score against the Netherlands in the first match (0–2). However, it had 0–0 up to the 83rd minute. Senegal missed Mané but hopes that the new striker – Ismaïla Sarr, Boulaye Dia and Krepin Diatta – will get to it in the second World Cup game.
- Double injuries
Senegal suffered two injuries in the first game, at the midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate and the defender Abdou Diallo. Kouyate is said to miss the Qatar match due to a thigh injury. For Diallo it was only about cramps and he is expected to be able to play.

The national team captain Louis van Gaal, 71, intends to quit as a coach after the World Cup. He hopes to be able to bring the Netherlands to the nation's very first World Cup gold. The Netherlands has been in three World Cup finals and in 2004 they came third. The country missed the World Cup 2018.
- The two-goal scorer
Ecuadorian Enner Valencia became the World Cup's first scorer. He scored both goals against Qatar. The Fenerbahce attacker, the captain of the national team, is Ecuador's foremost scorer of all time with 37 goal at 75 international matches. He was replaced in the game after a blow to the knee, but Federal captain Gustavo Alfaro said afterwards that Valencia will play against the Netherlands.

England crushed Iran with 6-to-2, but does not think that the USA will be as easy a trade. European Championship-finalist does not want to go in Argentina's or Germany's trap and lose against less ranked resistance. The USA started the World Cup by playing 1-1 against Wales.
- Harry Kanes injury
England's captain Harry Kane was beaten to the foot in the Iran match, replaced and later seen with a banded foot. However, despite the information that Kane would have to undergo further investigations of the injury, he is ready to play. He was already on Wednesday's training and the Federal Commander Gareth Southgate confirms that Kane can play.
Having done two goal against Iran, the USA is said to have been properly warned of the English attacker Bukayo Saka. England, for its part, is already aware of the USA attacker Christian Pulisic's qualities. He plays everyday in Chelsea in the Premier League.
